Twenty-eight colleges and universities are affiliated with the Society of Jesus in the United States.

The enterprise of Jesuit higher education is governed by its sense of mission. This mission…

► is in continuity with the historical evolution of the Ignatian charism dating back to 1551 when the Roman College opened its doors,

► respects the reality of being both a Catholic university and a Jesuit sponsored work,

► relies, perhaps as never before, on the collaborative talents and energies of Jesuits and their partners.

If you would like to read more about higher education in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition, read Communal Reflection on the Jesuit Mission in Higher Education: A Way of Proceeding.

The Jesuit schools of higher education form the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). For more information about the individual schools and the AJCU, visit www.ajcunet.edu.

The Missouri Province sponsors three universities in the United States and one junior college in Belize, Central America.

St. John’s College
PO Box 548
Belize City, Belize, Central America
Telephone: 011.501.223.3732
Website: www.sjc.edu.bz

Early in 1952, in response to the growing need in Belize for higher levels of academic training, St. John’s College expanded its traditional four-year high school program and began offering a limited number of post-secondary school courses. Over time, these limited offerings expanded into what, in the British tradition, is called Sixth Form, a two-year program leading to Advanced Level Examinations. In an effort to provide wider opportunities for further education for graduates of the Sixth Form, St. John’s College broadened the program of studies in the mid-1960s so that it met the requirements of the Associate Degree awarded by junior and community colleges in the United States. This afforded graduates of St. John’s College Sixth Form a choice of further studies: they could enter Commonwealth universities or universities in the United States as transfer students into the third year of a bachelor’s degree program. In 1960, St. John’s College Sixth Form was granted membership in the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges. Since the early days of St. John’s Junior College, it has continued to develop its academic programs, establishing the Evening Studies Program in 1990 and established the School of Professional Studies in partnership with Denver’s Regis University in 2006.
